WHAT IS PROJECT EVALUATION?

Make sure that your projects are conducted in the most efficient way and to the highest benefit of each project’s stakeholders. Depending on a project’s duration, evaluations can be conducted during and/or after a project. Evaluations beginning during the project are intended to assess ongoing activities and provide information to monitor and improve the project. This type of evaluation, sometimes called “process evaluation,” may occur once or several times during the life of the project. The purpose of evaluation after having finished a project is to assess its level of success in reaching its stated goals. Summative evaluation (sometimes referred to as impact or outcome evaluation) frequently addresses many of the same questions as a progress evaluation, but it takes place after the project has been established and the timeframe for change has occurred. Learning points for the evaluations are often: accomplishments, what worked and what didn’t, feedback on decision-making, assessment of cost-effectiveness, professionalism in project management, cooperation in the project group, contribution to policy development. A good project evaluation provides an extremely useful tool to manage ongoing projects, identify successes and plan effectively for new initiatives.
